Kaiya is the poster dog for all the good Rescue can accomplish just by providing love and a stable environment. Kaiya is a transformed little girl since CTDR brought her in. She was pretty rough looking at first: thin with bones showing and with red, inflamed patches on her head, tail and a few scattered here and there on her body. And, of course, absolutely scared to death. Fast forward to today: the red, angry sores are mostly healed and scars have taken their place. These bare patches may not completely regrow fur but she’s kind of cute with her “rodent tail”! She has gained weight and is almost plump. Her coat almost shines and her appetite is positively rapacious. While still shy, she’s responding well to love and stability and knowing where her next meal is coming from. Kaiya was diagnosed with vasculitis when she came into CTDR’s care based on how she looked. CTDR was unable to confirm this diagnosis through testing. However, a steady treatment of antibiotics, good skin hygiene and improved diet stopped whatever it was in its tracks. She started healing almost immediately. Kaiya has a lot of puppy in her. She’s submissive and timid and will occasionally squirt a couple drops when you pick her up. Almost immediately, she began using the pee pad and will ask to go outside for the big job. You do need to pay attention so you learn her signals. She’s playful with the other dogs in the household and would love to have a young dog like her to play with her. She’s cuddly, full of kisses and feels safest when she’s snuggled up next to you. Probably because she craves reassurance that she’s not going to be abandoned. She makes sure you know when she’s glad when you come in the door after a long day away: she wiggles her butt so vigorously that it’s almost in danger of flying off! Kaiya’s fur may never totally regrow. But it won’t stop her from giving kisses and wiggling her butt when she sees you. And it sure won’t stop you from loving her.
