Dachshund is not the impression you have when you first meet Mars. What you do see is a down-sized version of an Irish setter. For example Mars weighs 24 pounds, is 14” tall and 34” long from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. While he is loving, Mars is no lap dog.
He’s estimated to be 2 years with a lot of puppy still in him. He is highly energetic so he absolutely requires a home with a back yard for running and playing. Mars would be in Heaven if that backyard had another active dog in it. Mars is a very handsome boy who draws oooohhs and ahhhhs wherever he goes. He doesn’t let this go to his head however. He is friendly and playful with everyone and other dogs. Mars is a tennis ball fanatic who searches for it as soon as his eyes open in the morning. He loves it when his foster throws the ball for him.
Mars came into rescue when his owner returned him to a shelter. The owner said he had snapped at her 5 year old. In the 6 weeks the fosters have had him in their home, they have seen zero indication of Mars snapping at anyone or anything. Mars will go to the door to let you know he needs to go outside to potty. He also does best being on a schedule. He is very eager to please. He also is unusual: he does not beg at the table or anywhere else. He seems genuinely surprised should you offer him anything. Mars is no cuddler but he will greet you affectionately and enthusiastically whenever you need a hug. We all wish we could wake up happy like he does. He is a hard dog to not fall in love with! Mars is highly energetic and spirited.   He needs a yard where he can burn off all his energy and would be miserable confined in an apartment.
