UPDATE on Rocky: 4/3/2012
Rocky Balboa is a very Handsome, Black and Silver Dapple little Man. He is a "true Mini" weighing in at about 8.5 pounds. He is a feisty little guy and loves to play and wrestle and be around his "peeps"! He is house trained and goes to the door and barks when he needs to go outside. Rocky knows his name, and will come when called...usually, when he feels like it. He is, after all a Dachshund! He sleeps quietly in his crate, curled up and buried in his blankets. Rocky knows the command "Kennel" and will quickly and without hesitation enter his kennel and lie down when told. He will bark in his crate if he needs out to go potty. Rocky walks very well on a leash and quickly does his business so he can explore. He rides quietly in the car and likes to look out the window. Rocky is protective of his people! He barks at men, but will calm down and let them play with him, if they approach a little quietly and bend down to his level. He is quite the ladies man, and will wag his tail and make all kinds of little noises to get the ladies to come over and give him some attention! He has not been exposed to children at this time. Rocky gets along well with the other dogs in the house and they are all ages and sizes. Cats hold a great interest for Rocky and I think if allowed, he would chase them.
Rocky recently injured his back and underwent emergency surgery. He has recovered very quickly and the doctors are very impressed with his progress. If you did not know he had an injury, you could probably not tell by looking at him. He walks perfectly and although he is trying to jog, is not medically cleared at this time to do that! His tail wags a mile a minute and his little behind, wags and wiggles almost as much as his tail!
3/26/2012 UPDATE on Rocky Balboa following back surgery on 3/12/2012:
Rocky is doing great, better than expected! His stitches are out and for the most part, incision is well healed. There is a small place, about 1/2 inch at the base of the incision that is not quite closed yet. So will need to keep an eye on that part. Dr. is impressed with his walking. He is a little unsteady and rocks from side to side while walking. He is to continue the crate rest for 4 more weeks, but is to be exercised with 1- 5 min leash walk per day over the next 3 days, then increase that to 2 - 5 min leash walks for 3 days...then increase to 3- 5 min leash walks. Then can have multiple 5 min leash walks per day. The walking will help him re-learn his balance and weight shift.
I talked to them about Rocky getting really frustrated at being confined all the time. I was told that he could come out, and sit beside me on the floor, while being tethered with a leash, so he could not go anywhere. That may help him feel he is more a part of the gang and relieve his boredom some.
He is to return in 4 weeks for a re-check.
