UPDATE 5/15/2013:Spike, one fun guy! Spike came to Central Texas Dachshund Rescue when his soldier dog parent was deployed. Spike is about three years old, is neutered, and is a happy, energetic, well socialized dog. Spike likes people, loves attention, really enjoys being outdoors and going for walks. He will hike for miles, tail, up, ready to investigate! He goes after squirrels in the backyard, barks like a big dog when another dog walks by the fence, but is generally pretty quiet. Spike will go in his trait for a treat. Due to his overbite, he has to manipulate his goodies to get ‘em down. He is especially fond of deer antlers, Greenies, and Mother Hubbard biscuits. Spike has a touch of reflux, and will reverse sneeze if allowed to eat too fast – a slow bowl helps keep him from eating his Grain Free Wellness kibble vacuum style! This little fellow enjoys playing with his foster brother and sister, doesn’t exhibit dominant behavior, and sleeps either under the blanket on the floor or by his foster mom’s feet at night. When you sit at the computer, Spike will come and put his paws on your leg to ask to go outside or get on your lap. Spike’s a climber; he can leap up onto quite a few things with ease! Smart and eager to please, Spike responds well to a tug on the leash or an “Aa!” correction. He seems quite smart, having learned sit, crate, off and a few other commands. Spike is housetrained if crated or toileted. He can show a bit of leash aggression towards oncoming bicycles or cars, but again responds well to correction. This loveable dog would do well with an active owner, with another small dog to play with, or as an only dog if he was given lots of affection. Although Spike is an athletic boy, he also loves his cuddle time and will give hugs as well as kisses to show his appreciation. Muscular with a silky soft coat, Spike is a delight to pet and loves being stroked, getting chest rubs and neck massages. Overall, Spike is an exceptional small dog with a great heart that will blossom in a loving home.
UPDATE 4/23/2013: Spike is a fine little fellow. He can dance on his hind legs, is a great walker, and loves attention. He can be a little pushy about getting up on your lap, but I think that is due to the sudden changes he's been going through and a need for reassurance, which is understandable. He's a good sleeper; likes being in contact with a human and other dogs at night. We crate him when we leave to run errands. Spike barks like a big dog, but only to give warning or express excitement over a squirrel or bird he's chasing. He is wearing a belly band in the house to discourage scent marking. Spike is kinda goofy looking from the side with his overbite, but he's very pretty, with a silky coat. He does well in the car, just curls up and waits to see what will happen. Spike is a basically a very secure, well socialized dog. Spike is likely to bond quickly to his new family,
Spike is a happy go lucky dog. He enjoys barking and chasing after squirrels. Spike will play around if you are on the floor with him. He doesn't play fetch or chew on things because of his huge over bite. He is picky with treats. He loves to cuddle on the bed under the covers. Under blankets is where he likes to lay to hide. Spike is house-trained, walks on a leash and like rides in a vehicle. He is great with kids and other dogs once he warms up to the dogs. All around Spike is a great dog.
